Analysis of IL-33 gene polymorphism (rs1157505 C/G, rs11792633 C/T) and risk of vesicoureteral reflux in southeast of Iran

Abstract
Background: Many studies have investigated the association between cytokine gene polymorphism and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) susceptibility. The present study purposed to survey the association between interleukin-33 gene polymorphism (rs11792633 C/T, rs1157505C/G) and VUR.
Methods: The tetra-primer amplification mutation refractory system-polymerase chain reaction (ARMS PCR) was applied to survey two SNPs of the IL-33 gene in 100 healthy controls and 129 children with VUR disease. SPSS software was used to analyze the data.
Results: Analysis showed that one single nucleotide polymorphism (rs1157505G/C, rs11792633C/T) in the IL-33 gene is associated with VUR. This association was found between the IL-33 CG genotype and an increased risk of VUR (OR: 0.38; CI: 0.76 -0.19). The frequency of allele G at the site of the IL-33 gene (rs1157505) showed a statistical difference (0.001)between cases and controls in comparison with the wild type.
Conclusion: This is the first observation regarding IL-33 cytokine gene polymorphism and the risk of VUR. However, it is necessary to study this evidence with a larger sample size in different populations to confirm the present data.
