Background: The most comprehensive way to deal with pathogens is by using disinfectants. So far, many types of disinfectants have been introduced for use in various industries and centers. New studies emphasize the use of nanoparticles and other new compounds.
Materials and methods: This article is an overview article written by reviewing articles published at Science Direct in the field of new chemical disinfectants. To conduct this research, the keywords related to disinfection were studied in the advanced search of this site. In total, 600 papers were selected since 2009, in which they investigated new materials and their disinfection properties
Findings: Of the 600 papers found in the search process, 477 articles were about the use of compounds such as silver and nanoparticles of silver, complexes, zinc oxide and nanoparticles, titanium dioxide, and electrolyzed water or EOW. Then, articles about the toxicity of the compounds were reviewed.
Conclusion: By reviewing various articles about new disinfectants, it is concluded that the focus of the new research is on the use of nanoparticles, complexes and new physicochemical methods, including electrolysis in the manufacture of disinfectants. EOW disinfectants, which are most used in the food industry, have the least toxic and harmful effects on the environment. Of course more studies are needed to evaluate its toxicity and its effectiveness in other industries and centers because of the newness of this disinfectant.
